Watch- out, This Lady's Tricky...

I will always love and respect Martha, but the truth is... I have trust issues with her.
You see, about 12 years ago she took me to school [Martha Stewart style] and I swore I'd never be fooled by her again.

It all began when I found a recipe in her magazine for a nice, cold, refreshing, summery ginger ice cream dessert [I have tried to block the experience from my memory, so I can't recall exactly what it was called]. Anyway, I saw it and thought, "Wow, that looks amazing. I'm going to make that." In all of my sweet innocence, I jotted out to the grocery for the ingredients [ahhh, life before kids!].
I came home and began making my yummy dessert...
Step one: Grate one 6 inch piece of fresh ginger root [No problem- done].
Step two: Place 2 cups of sugar, 2 cups of water and freshly grated ginger in saucepan and bring to a boil [Got it. easy, I must be some kind-a Martha Stewart wiz].
Step three: Reduce to a simmer and cook for one hour [Ummm, okay, but I want my dessert before midnight...].
Step four: Strain ginger from syrup and let cool [Wait, so I'm throwing away that stuff that took so long to grate and I have to wait longer? Okay Martha, but this better be good.].
Step five: Add Sparkling Seltzer Water to your ginger syrup. [WHAT THE ?!? *Shaking fists in the air*]

Yup. The woman tricked me. I made homemade Ginger Ale. Worst part- that wasn't even the entire recipe... there was much more to it, so I could have just bought Ginger Ale and used it in the dessert. I don't even remember how the stupid dessert tasted, but I'll never forget how annoyed I was!

Moral of the story: Read all directions before you begin any project [whether it's DIY or food] and use your brain rather than blindly trusting anyone [for any reason].
Maybe making homemade Ginger Ale seems awesome to you [boom: now you've got the recepe... go ahead and pin this post & you're all set to make a $4 glass of soda!], but I was tricked into it and not thrilled.
Like I said, I'll always love her; but the trust has been broken ;)

I almost couldn't pin this one. Not because I didn't love it, but because I have never enjoyed the combination of gold and black together [ever]. I think of it as bachelor pad decor [circa 1987]. But... I try to pin with an open mind... and I really found this entire vinette beautiful!

What I'm lovin': Bamboo Fencing!

As I continue to search for beautiful garden inspiration, I have seen some gorgeous uses for bamboo fencing. I love the texture that it adds to any space, but especially gardens. Here are a few of my favorite examples [each photo is linked to its source, so click away!]:

This space is gorgeous, so serene and pretty. The bamboo provides privacy, shade and interest to this space. It takes the space from feeling like a typical deck to a little private retreat!

I just love this use for bamboo fencing as well. Talk about thinking outside the box! What a perfect way to provide shade for your space while adding texture. So natural and yet still modern. Nice!

Guess what's behind this fence?! An ugly cement block wall. What a great solution to cover something unwanted... it looks completely natural and so, so pretty.

DIY Organizational Ideas

Today I'm sharing what I did to get my armoire organized. I realize that the reality of organization is that everyone's space and needs are different. However, I'm writing this How-To so that [hopefully] you can take these ideas and alter them to meet your specific needs.
First of all, I want to emphasize what I did NOT do: I didn't run off to the organization isle of a department store and spend hundreds of dollars. I used my existing bookcase [free], a hollow core door [$28], a homasote board [$8], a bedsheet [free], an old framed poster that I already had [free]. , and nine baskets [$64]. Look around your house, see what you have and get creative to see how you can use it!
The first thing I did was transform my boring laminate bookcase as described in Transforming a Laminate Bookcase. This step wasn't technically necessary for organizing the space; however, I've discovered that if I don't make my organization pretty, then there's really no hope of keeping it organized. That's just me, though [and I'm guessing it might be true for many of my fabulous & super stylish readers as well!].

Next, I added my Large and In Charge [literally] Dry Erase Calendar. Easy-Peesy DIY Awesomeness.

Then I made my bulletin boards for the doors. Read Making a Chalk and Bulletin Board to learn how make a beautiful, inexpensive and super functional bulletin board. When it was time to hang them on the doors I had a couple issues: I didn't want to put a bunch of holes in my armoire, and I didn't want the boards flopping around when the doors opened/closed. Sooo, I was super excited to find the perfect product: Command [you know, the brand that's known for its removable hooks] Velcro [like] product. It's wonderful. I found them right next to the hooks, and they are super strong... I just put one strip on the top and one on the bottom and those suckers aren't going anywhere!

Then I decided that I wanted a longer shelf area on top of the bookcase, so I used the rest of my handy-dandy hollow core door. I measured what size I needed and cut the door to fit [and painted it... of course].
In order to cover a hole in the back of my armoire [it used to hold our tv back in the day when they were ugly, giant mammoths!] and provide additional support for my [new] top shelf, I cut a piece of scrap MDF to fit in that little area. Once everything was painted it looked great!! [Well, not bad for a totally non-wood working girlie, anyway]
Then I had a tall, narrow space and I wasn't sure what to do with it... until I found these awesome wire baskets [which I'm totally diggn' right now]. They were just the right size to hang in the space.

Once again, I didn't want a bunch of holes, so I used the Command Brand plastic Hooks [I bought the less expensive white plastic ones and used Rub n' Buff to make them silver & purrdy] to hang them. Genious [if I do say so myself].

Finally, I filled and added all of the baskets [which I purchased from a discount store... I looked for sturdy baskets that looked decent. [Unless money grows on your trees] Please don't spend alot of $$ on fancy baskets... after all, a basket's a basket for goodness sake!].
I also added a little mirror at the last minute so that when I'm grabbing my purse I can check to make sure I look fabulous before running out the door [and by fabulous I mean "at least I don't have broccoli in my teeth"].
And that's it! I hope you can use some of these ideas to transform a space into an affordable organizational bliss too!

Life Altering Organizational Design!

[Question:] What do you get when you combine an old bookcase, hallow core door, bed sheet, old framed poster, some homasote board and baskets?

[Answer:] Pure Organziational Life-Altering Bliss!!

Let's take a moment for a quick little journey back in time and remember what this armoire [which I affectionately refer to as My Brain] looked like a few weeks ago: I know. Yikes.

Can I just tell you that getting my daily life "stuff" organized in a beautiful way has dramatically improved my quality of life [not to mention my sanity]?!

Here's WHY it works for me:
Each door has a bulletin board to keep all of the kid's school calendars/permission slips/sports info/invitations, etc. You know, all that stuff [also known as crap-o-la] that's important but never has a good home [until now!].

The Giant DIY Dry Erase Calendar that I showed you how to make has been WON.DER.FUL. All activities are right there for me so see, and I'm a visual person, so having it "large and in charge" is working for me. Plus, my new obsession is preparing 7 meals at once and then freezing them... then I can just dethaw one and put it in the crock pot in the morning and dinner's done! That's where my weekly dinner menu has been perfect. I wake-up, see what is on the menu for that day, and if it's a crock pot meal then I see it early enough to get it cooking [as opposed to going, "D-oh, I meant to do a crock pot meal today and it's already 4:00..."]

Next, I bought baskets, baskets and more baskets. I took all of my junk out of the armoire and grouped it according to function. Then I went and purchased the correct size basket needed for my groups.

The bottom basket holds techi stuff [camcorders, cameras, etc].
The smaller bottom basket holds mail stuff [envelopes, cards, address books, stamps, etc.].
The open basket in the middle holds my smaller recipe books. I don't use them all that much [thanks to the Internet...], but when I need them, I want them handy [and when I don't need them, I want them hidden!].
The basket with a lid... Well, let's just say that's "mommy's" basket. I love lids, and here's why: Is it perfectly organized inside as if it were owned by Martha Stewart herself, or is it filled and stuffed with random junk. I'll never tell [it's junk].
The two smaller baskets on top are for The Dry Erase Calendar markers and my Super Hero Hubby's keys, wallet, etc. All that good stuff that jumps out of his pockets when he comes in the door.

Finally, the little wire baskets are my kids'. Each has an assigned basket, and when I find something of theirs lying around the house [which happens every day, all the time, always always always] I put it into their baskets and they can put it in the appropriate place at their convenience [yea right, they put them up when I start threatening :)] And last, but not least... my purse has it's own little home. No fancy basket, just a spot to toss it and/or grab it on the run!

How to Make a Dry Erase Calendar [it's easy, folks]

Take a look at this, because it's going to change my life [that's a lot of pressure for a dry-erase board, isn't it?!]. In an effort to get myself & my family organized, I made this dry-erase calendar. Want to know the best part? It was free because I used stuff I already had around the house. Here's how you can make one [and change your life] too!

Here's how it all began: Klimt's The Kiss, a framed poster from my college days. I'll always love his work, but it was time to say "Bu-bye" to the poster since it's been in storage for about 10 years [plus it grosses out my kids, heehee]. I just painted the frame white [cuz' I pretty much paint everything white these days.]

Then I went to my "stash" and found some sheets that I love [I purchased them about 5 years ago... Even though they didn't match any rooms... And they didn't fit any beds in my house... And I knew I wouldn't actually use them for their designed purpose. No, I'm not a hoarder. I just know awesome sheets when I see them, haha!]. After ironing them once or twice [maybe three times...] they looked great!

I removed the cardboard backing and applied the fabric to it. I left a one inch boarder on all sides and then used a glue gun to secure the edges. I didn't bother to make perfect, fancy edges because the frame will cover all those details anyway.

Now for the calendar. Using the dry erase marker [in case I change my mind and no longer need a calendar... Not going to happen, though], I measured out my calendar and drew it using a straight edge.

Now for the tricky part [or at least as "tricky" as I get]. I flipped the drawn-out calendar side toward my fabric. See?! Now I have a calendar, but it won't erase [well... unless I flip it over and erase it, anyway].

And that's it! Now I simply fill in the dates and I have an awesome calendar. Want to know a bonus? I left extra room at the bottom to write each day's dinner menu. The kids love being able to check and see what's to look forward to each evening [or not look forward to], and I love having everything so handy! Not bad for FREE!

Which is why I'm super excited to tell you all about Houzz! I discovered this website via Pinterest, and I. Love. It. You can get lost for hours looking through all of the gorgeous interior design decor photos on this great site.
Here's what I really [really] like about it:
1. Once you register [which is free, of course!] you can start your own Idea Book to keep your favorite photos together.
2. It has a really great search engine that allows you to search for specific criteria. Sometimes when I'm searching Pinterest I get [a bit] frustrated because I have to rely on random descriptions [does that ever happen to you?]. Houzz makes it so simple to find exactly what you are after.
3. The sources are all accurate! If you like the design and want to learn more, just go straight to the designer's website... no hunting around.
4. There are awesome articles written by interior designers. So many inspirational tips and ideas!
5. Your design questions answered! There's even a handy spot to ask a question and view previously asked questions. So handy, right?!
6. Do you do Interior Design too? Register your business and you can upload photos to gain exposure!

How to Give a Laminate Bookcase a [fabulous] Makeover

I'm guessing that we all have a faux wood laminate bookcase somewhere in our home. I'm guessing that we all want to paint it and make it look better [and I'm positive that we're all scared to...]. Well, this is how I successfully said "good-bye" to that [less than fabulous] faux wood grain and gave my bookcase a serious upgrade.

I decided to replace the existing shelves for a few reasons. First of all, the old shelves had begun to bow under the weight of all my books [and clutter!]. Secondly, I wanted a stronger shelf to avoid bowing in the future. And lastly, I wanted it to be purr-dy, so I thought a thicker shelf would give my bookcase more of a custom look [and by custom, I mean "not purchased from Wal-Mart!"].

1. In order to create those thicker, stronger shelves I took a hollow-core door [like the one used in my DIY Floating Shelves tutorial] and traced the existing shelves onto it [make sure that the front of each shelf is placed on the finished edge of your door so that you have a nice, finished edge!]. Then I taped over my pencil lines and re-drew them on the tape. That prevents the wood from splitting. Finally, I used a circular saw to cut out each shelf following my traced lines.

2. Begin the painting process by using a deglosser like Porter Paint's Prepare-It. It takes the place of sanding, so it's great for prepping laminate surfaces.

3. Use a really good primer [one specifically designed for glossy surfaces is the best] I used Kilz. Remember... the better your primer, the better your final results.

4. Now. With that said... I have mentioned before in my Painting [over] Faux Wood post that there are two types of faux wood. One is a veneer placed over particle board [that can be painted], the other is essentially plastic that looks like wood [that pretty much can't]. Well, the back of my bookshelf was basically the plastic stuff... so I went ahead and attempted to paint it anyway [rules are made to be broken, right?! [wrong]]. Therefore, when it was all dry and beautiful I taped-off my [super awesome] design to paint a [totally amazing] decoration... and the tape totally ripped-off the paint [super not awesome].

5. I chose to go ahead and repaint it [as shown below]. Then I purchased a set of wall decals. These were perfect because they essentially covered the entire surface [which means that it is protected now] and I could arrange them as I wanted [I did have to peel and rearrange one or two... which was terrifying. But the paint stayed so it's not completely worthless!]. It was much less expensive than wallpaper, and it was WAY easier too, so I highly recommend using them!

6. Next, in go those fancy new shelves, and it's a whole new bookcase!
7. Do your happy dance, stand back and just TRY to fill it up with books that will cover-up your beauty, because that's actually the worst part of this entire project!

A Cinderella Story [if she were a bookcase]

... and the laminate bookcase lived happily ever after!

Well, it's been awhile since I've pulled out my magic wand [okay, it's actually just an old paint brush] for a good-ol' furniture transformation here on Salvage Savvy, so I'm excited to show you this one today!

I started with the same laminate bookshelf that everyone in the United States has [seriously, I think it's been written into our pledge of Allegiance now, "With Liberty and laminate bookshelves for all..."]. With a vision of what it could become, some paint and a couple upgrades it has become the Belle of the Ball. In fact, it's way to pretty to cover-up with books [d'oh, I may have over-shot my mark because I seriously didn't want to put anything back in it!].

Now, please don't get me wrong. Like every true Fairy Tale, this story wasn't without its fair share of heart-aches and drama. It tried to break my heart.

But nonetheless, I persisted and earned my happy ending!

Monday [P]inspiration: Timeless Beauty

Lately I've had one word in mind as I dream of future design projects for around my house: Timeless. You see, a couple months ago [while pinning] I stumbled upon this photo of Grace Kelly which was taken in 1955. It took my breath away. This is timeless beauty.

That is what I want for my home. In the same spirit, here is some inspiration for gorgeous interiors that will be enjoyed for many, many years.

This room is stunning. Not trendy, and yet, not stuffy either. This is great interior design that is sure to stand the test of time.

What an elegant entry. So clean and crisp, yet the golden frames and weathered-wood add warmth.

I love this. And I'm sure that I will still love it in 50 years. That's good design!

*Sigh* Clean lines are always in style. Eclectic [but classic] furniture that is timeless. And the painted cherry blossom branches add an organic feel. All these elements combine to create a bedroom that will always be beautiful.

What a great dining room. It's completely unexpected and yet so [so] right!

Welcome inside by brain [Warning: it's not pretty]

Guess what I've been doing... Not that I needed to, but I decided to go ahead and get the inside of this cabinet organized. Other bloggers make claims about not being perfect, but not me. I give you the evidence.
This armoire is located in my kitchen, and I call it "my brain" because everything that I need for daily life is pretty much located right here. Well, I'd say this photo pretty much sums-up how my real brain has felt lately as well... I had to get it under control, even if for no other reason than my own sanity.

The only reason I didn't start this project sooner is this: no matter how bad it looked on the inside, I could shut the doors and not care. Well, no more! I'm about half-way done and sooo excited to show you all! But in the meantime, back to work!

Monday (P)inspiration: Organized & Beautiful

I'm an organization junkie. I just can't get enough of it [and yet, I'm never organized... go figure]. This week I'm doing a big project, and its success will change my life forever [how's that for drama?]. In the meantime, I've been scouring Pinterest for inspiration and here's what I've found! As always, each photo is linked to its source.

Yes, technically I've already showcased this space... but it was from a different angle so it totally doesn't count! I actually had no idea how tiny this space was... now I love it even more!

Wire baskets. I'm in love. They look industrial and vintage and everything else that is wonderful!

I still remember when I saw this office for the first time in BH&G. It was love [and jealousy, if I'm being totally honest] at first sight. Gasp. *Sigh* 'Nuff said.

What a great huge frame. I would totally put a fabric-covered homasote board in there and have the biggest, baddest bulletin board in the history of E.V.E.R. :)

Look at these adorable little tags that have been painted with chalkboard paint! I'm totally doing this. But I'd have to label my baskets J1, J2, J3 & J4 [Junk basket 1, Junk basket 2, etc.!]

This is the rock-star of armories. This is my goal. This is my dream.

If you do projects that involve fabric, then you have leftover pieces of fabric. If you're like me then you can't get rid of them "just in case." Here's an awesome idea for storing that fabric!

Hopefully you've been inspired... hopefully I've been inspired because I've got A LOT of work ahead of me this week!

Today I'm Salvaging: A Weeknight Valentine's Dinner

I'm guessing that I'm not alone on this one: it's Valentine's Day [woo-hoo!] but it's also Tuesday [boo]... and last time I checked no one gets the day off of work or school on Valentines Day which means life goes on as usual.

Soooo... will I be dining at a romantic restaurant with my super hero hubby? [most likely not] ...will I be driving my son to basketball practice or my daughter to ballet? [most likely yes]. And there lies the typical mom's Valentine's Day challenge: how to turn a typical weeknight meal into something special [and do it quickly].

I was recently presented with the opportunity to take the Bertolli's Make a Weeknight Meal Special Challenge. My first thought was, "Hmmm probably not. I love their meals, but Salvage Savvy isn't a food blog." Then I changed my mind for one reason: because of what Salvage Savvy is. I write each post with the hope of inspiring my fabulous readers [that's you!] to get creative and turn the ordinary into something extraordinary... and that's exactly what this challenge is about! With that in mind, I had exactly one hour to turn a typical weeknight meal into something spectacular.

My Menu:

Bertolli's Tomato Florentine & Tortellini with Chicken Meal Soup

Cesar Salad

Garlic Bread

Brazilian Lemonade

I'm thinking you know how to make Cesar Salad or Garlic Bread, but you might not have ever made Brazilian Lemonade. It' is a little drink that's perfect for those "fancy-pants" dinners! We love it because it's sweet and refreshing, but also cold and creamy. YUM! It doesn't take long, but makes any meal feel special. Here's the recipe:

Brazilian Lemonade

5 T lime juice [did you know that in Brazil a lime is called a lemon?]
1/2 C Sugar

3 T sweetened condensed milk

3 C water
Ice

1. Put first 4 items into blender. 2. Just before serving, add ice and blend, then serve immediately.

Now for Ambiance [it's a candle light picnic!]:

Tablecloth

Trays

Candles [flame-less if you've got little ones running around]

Pillows for lounging

Music

Spread-out your tablecloth in the living room, arrange candles as you please, throw down the pillows for comfort, turn off lights, start your music and you're done! Sit back and enjoy your simple, super fast and soooo delicious Valentine's dinner. I promise that this will be a night that the kiddos or hubby will never forget, and I did everything in an hour... ambiance & all, not bad!

Here's what you need to know about Bertolli's Meal Soup selections:

How to Build Inexpensive Floating Shelves

Open Shelving in a kitchen is wonderful, and we installed these two floating shelves for around $30! Here's how:

First, purchase a hollow-core door [yes, I said door!!] I plan to devote an entire post just to sing the praises of these doors... I've used them in sooo many projects, they are wonderful for any thrifty DIYer.]

Hollow-core doors are inexpensive and come in various widths so choose one that is the width of the shelves you want to hang because you are going to cut off the top & bottom of this door for your shelves. They give you a completely finished edge, so it's a great idea! Now we wanted 3ft. shelves, so we used a 3 ft. door. [Or, if you have room for really long shelves you could use the sides of the door instead!]

Next, decide the depth of shelves you want [I don't recommend anything deeper than 10"] and measure and mark everything out on your door. Once you've measured twice [so you only have to cut once], cut the door using a circular saw [make sure to tape where you are cutting to help avoid splitting the wood].

Remove the cardboard reinforcement that is found inside the door [see below] by scraping it off with a chisel.

Now it's time to cut your cleats from a 2x4. To get the correct size, you'll want to measure the space between the outer veneers of the door. Mine was 1" Using a straight edge, cut your 2x4 down to the appropriate size. Make sure this is a really nice, straight cut [yes, it's important]. Check to make sure that the door [well... now I guess it's a shelf!] slides easily over your cleat while maintaining a snug fit.

[Sorry, no photos of this step] Next, you'll need to find the studs in your wall using a studfinder. Mark them, and [using a level and straight edge] draw a straight line where you want your shelves. Once you know where they are, predrill holes into the studs and then hold your cleat on your straight line and drill into the cleat too. Using a wrench, install a lag screw through your cleat and into each stud until it's tight against the wall. [You MUST have at least 2 studs, but you already knew that, right?!] And of course, double & triple check that everything is level as you work [but you already knew that... right?!]. Now you have [an ugly] board securely screwed onto your wall.

Now do a dry fit onto the wall to see if you have any areas to sand. You want the shelf to fit perfectly against the wall. When everything is right, use carpenter's glue on the top of your cleat and the bottom of your board and slip the shelf onto the board [immediately clean-up any glue that may ooze out]. Now- just using glue "ain't gonna cut it" if you want a secure shelf. Therefore, for additional support, screw the shelf onto your cleat. We simply used screws every 2 inches along the top and and bottom of our shelf as shown in the photo below. Yes, you've got screws showing now, but they really aren't noticable [at all]. If the screws really bother you then simply fill them with putty before painting. Obviously they didn't bother me. [And for the record, I'm really regretting that quick paint job now... never noticed it until taking this photo! It would be best to paint before installing them so do as I say, not as I do!]

And that's it- your shelves are complete! Enjoy :)

Monday (P)inspiration: Color of the Year 2012

Pantone Tangerine Tango is the official color of 2012. Although I'm not a big fan of trends, it just so happens that I am a big fan of Tangerine [and have been for the past few years]. Here are some great rooms on Pinterest that show the versatility and cheerfulness of this color!

Such a gorgeous dining room. Now imagine it with white chairs. It would still be amazing, but those tangerine chairs add so much energy and life to the room!

I love, love [love] that chair. And notice the bookcase: it's a perfect example of how to make a bookcase look amazing. It has tangerine accents that tie into the room decor and it starts-out decorative on top [where your eye is automatically drawn]. Then notice the bottom two shelves: completely functional [stacked books/mags], but with art placed in front to keep it interesting.

I love the tangerine accents in this room because those boxes add color without taking over the space. Just lovely.

That rug [I want one!].

This room is a great example of how to add color without commitment. If you want to keep-up with trends without breaking the bank redecorating, here's the perfect room for you! Change-out a few pillows and accent pieces and you're done.

I just love this. Why not paint your organizational area such a bright, cheery color?! Maybe that's what it will take for me to actually put things away!!!

So, there are a few ideas for incorporating Tangerine into your decor without letting it take over... it's a great color [no matter what year it is!!].

Room to Grow: Decorating a Boy's Bedroom

The time had come... the room that I created for my kids when they were toddlers just didn't work anymore for my [almost] eight year old son. You see, my son and daughter shared a room from birth until the oldest turned six [I highly recommend this for all parents of young children regardless if they are the same sex or not. I wanted them to truly bond and I really didn't want any "NO BOYS/GIRLS ALLOWED" attitudes... so this was my solution. It worked. They are super [super] close... so far!]. Anyway, my son was finally ready for a change. Just not too much of a change. So here is the journey we took to create a pre-tween room that will grow with him.

Here's a quick little "before" moment. [I would have more before photos for you... but my laptop crashed and we haven't retrieved any photos from it. Frankly, I'm too sad to think about it so I'm in denial right now.] Anyway, I painted the bunk beds a dark espresso color which made them look a hundred times better. Then we had a little [ahem...] discussion about the polka dot walls. He wanted to keep them, and yet... he wanted them to be different [ummmm. Say what? I promise that my kids always prove to be my most difficult clients every time!].

So we kept them [kind of]. I repainted almost every. single. one. Fun, fun, fun [sarcasm], but I must admit that they look pretty darn good in the new subdued and more sophisticated color scheme so I'm glad we kept them! Then we began the task of decorating. I did this room on an EXTREMELY small budget, so here's a little recap of the DIY projects that were involved. First, I made "HI" for his room because if you know my son, then you know he loves that word. Not sure why, but it's his favorite word... so it's only appropriate to greet his "guests" with a giant Hi! Read Think Outside the Box: Beyond Initials to see how I made this industrial looking welcome sign out of paper mache. Also, check out Add Detail to Plain Roman Shades to see how I did a quick [and super inexpensive] update to his previously plain white shade.

Then I made a little reading corner for him [let's just call it that... but I can't actually say that he reads there. Come on, how many boys actually use a reading nook?! I usually trip over him in the living room floor when he's "sprawled out" with a good book!] Anyway, I love this spot... however it's used! I hung paper lanterns [which were in his old room too] to play off of the polka dots.

I also created a little area to showcase the things that are near and dear to this boy's heart: sports and horses. I [reluctantly] started a sports gallery wall for him, but now I love it and can't wait to add more great action shots in the future! Here are my tips for creating an interesting display in Do You Display Them?

I also think it's really important to display kids' art whenever possible. I still recall when my dad had a chalk drawing of mine professionally framed and hung in our kitchen when I was twelve. It was amazing! In the same spirit, I framed and displayed some art that worked in his room. I also created an area for him to rotate his own artwork in and out as he pleases. This fabric-covered bulletin board was super easy to make. BTW- isn't that tree great?! Yup. He's an awesome artist.

Alright, so this photo isn't the best, but that shiny thing on the wall is a lamp. While on Pinterest one day I saw a tricked-out, high end bunk bed. Among other fabulous features, it had wall sconces for each level. I showed my son and he was IN LOVE! We happened to have a plug-in swivel arm wall sconce that wasn't being used so I hung it up and made his day. Night light. Reading light. Make sure there are no monsters in the night light. No matter what, he's covered!!

And we can't forget that I gave his dresser a not-so-ordinary makeover using magnetic paint. Read Make Kids' Dressers Fun with Magnetic Paint to see what I did. *Design note: I'm not thrilled with the fabric on his bulletin board. I went ahead and used it because I haven't found anything better... but it may be changing soon.*

I was also thrilled to get rid of his toy box [also known as the black hole where all toys fall to the bottom never to be seen again!]. I replaced it with three super inexpensive under-the-bed storage bins. If you want to know more about them you can find out in my Crap with Potential post.

And that's it! I am really, really pleased with the end result. This room totally shows his personality, and I was able to get the job done for less than $200. Not bad. He's happy. I'm happy. It's a room that will grow with him [not sure how long the polka dots will stay... but we'll see!]. Mission accomplished.

Concrete Counter Top Tutorial

Finally, the long awaited how-to post [and quite possibly my longest post ever!].

Of course, I must begin this with a caution: if you choose to make your own concrete counter tops, please do all kinds of research before beginning. In this post I will tell you step by step what we did [and it worked great for us]. However, before you begin a huge endeavor like this, I want you to be fully equipped with all kinds of knowledge. My dad [who is now retired] had a construction business for a million years [give or take a year], and he was kind enough to talk us through the project- so I felt confident. I want you to feel confident too!

So, without further adieu... here's what we did:

1.Call a concrete finisher [What?! This is supposed to be a DIY project!]. Trust me, it [mostly] is- but here's the thing: finishing concrete is an art. We were going to do it all ourselves, then at the last minute my dad called his concrete guy and asked him to finish it instead. At first I was like, "Hmmm. I was gonna do it, that's more $$ to spend!" But... then I watched him moving that trowel thingy around like a true artist and I was like, "OMG[oodness], I'm so glad I didn't try to do that myself." So here's my suggestion- find someone who will finish the concrete but is willing to let you do the grunt work [make the forms, mix and haul the concrete, pour it... trust me, you'll still have plenty to do]. This will save you a TON of cash, but you'll still get a beautiful finished product.

2.Purchase your concrete [get the good stuff, it's not very expensive] and rent a mixer [trust me... you'll wish you had one if you don't].

3. Build your forms. This part was H.A.R.D. [hope you like math...]

Take all measurements and then remove existing counter tops. Lay down 1"x12" boards on cabinets [lengthwise]. You will have to piece them together and cut boards to the appropriate length for your cabinets. You are creating the base for your counters, so make sure that your boards are flush with the sides of the cabinets.[you can just barely see the wood board in the photo below. That's what you want] When you're finished with this part it will look like you have a wooden plank counter top. At this point, you need to do all necessary cut-outs [like your sink]. You need to know the size & shape of your sink as well as the faucet placements, so if you haven't purchased one yet, do it now! Under mount sinks come with a pattern- use a jigsaw to cut that pattern out in your planks. Also, be sure to cut necessary holes for faucets or any additional special features that require access through your counter top.

Now you'll need 1"x1 1/4" boards [that's the size we used... you can use a different size if you want different overhang dimensions]. These boards will form the bottom edge of your counter top as shown in the photo above. Use drywall screws to secure theses boards right to your cabinets [this might freak you out... I was going to paint my cabinets anyway so I was fine with it. However, the holes were tiny and not noticeable anyway... even if you aren't painting, you could easily use pre-tinted wood filler and never notice the holes.]. If you have an over hang [as shown here in the photo below] then there is no cabinet to secure your bottom board to, so you'll need a 1"x4" board instead. Then you can simply screw up into the 1"x12" board [as shown... it's been painted grey] for support. You'll also want to place a 2"x4" board on the floor and build struts every 3 feet to shore-up the outer edge until the concrete is completely dry.

Now it's time to add the board that will form the edge of your counter top. [See above photo] We used 1"x3 1/2" boards to get the thickness we wanted, and then secured them to the 1 1/4" boards that are already attached [screw them into the 1x1 1/4" boards]. Be sure to have a laser line to ensure everything is level throughout this process. Also, be sure to check that the top of your forms are level [which will be the top of your counter top], so you don't end-up with a slanted counter. One more note: be sure to measure around your stove. We don't have any overhang around ours because there wasn't enough room [see above photo].
We also added rebar inside the counter for additional support. You don't want the rebar resting on the boards [because it's useless then], so screw in 1/2" screws into the planks and set the rebar on top of them [so it "floats"] every 2-3 ft.
Once our form was put together we taped each joint using packing tape [that clear stuff] in order to keep the concrete from running out the cracks. Make sure you tape the joints on your wooden planks too [you don't want it oozing into your cabinets]!
Note: where your cabinets join together it creates support for the counter top. Most cabinets are significantly less than 60" in width [mine were], but if you have a really long unsupported span [greater than 60"] then you'll need to put in a shoring strut [again, this is very unlikely... ask your concrete guy what that is if it applies to you!].
Now, where your counter meets the wall you'll want to chalk a straight line. Use the top of your forms to get the height [and make sure it's straight... that's super important]. Using that chalk line as your guide, nail a very thin 1/2" strip board to the wall. This will be the straight edge that your concrete finisher uses to keep everything in line so that you don't have a whompy back splash line [yes, he'll need it... don't forget this step!]. It can simply be removed once the concrete is poured & finished.
Now, back to your sink... it will have directions on how to mount, so follow those directions when prepping the area to make sure you can mount it in the end! If your sink has all square corners [LUCKY!], then you can simply use boards to create the form. However, our sink was curved so we used a piece of aluminum. It was flexible which allowed us to create curves. It's also really, really hard to do right, it took us a while.
The forms are now complete. [Whew!]

5. You are ready to pour! Just before pouring we sprayed Pam on the inside of the wood forms [I know... weird]. This is a precautionary step to prevent the forms from sticking. Just make sure that you don't use any spray with sugar in it, because that will mess-up the concrete [not sure if they make sugar Pam... but just in case!]. Mix your concrete according to the directions on the bag. You want to pour it as dry as possible [if there's too much water then there's a greater risk of cracking when it dries]. Be sure to cover your floors to protect them from any spills or drips, then begin filling & hauling. We hauled it in buck by bucket, pouring it into the forms as directed by the professional. You'll work at his [or her] rate. Then I got to relax for a bit as he worked his magic. [halfway through the project we lost power. By then it was night so he had to work by candlelight... it was memorable to say the least!]. One note- make sure that your concrete finisher taps/shakes the forms often to cause a vibration. This will result in smoother edges.

6. Now you wait. And wait [and wish you had your kitchen sink]. And then wait some more. It will start to look dry after a day or two [but it's not yet]. You'll want to take those forms off, but don't for at least 4-5 days. You want it to be completely cured first.

7. Time to [finally] remove the forms [this part is SO exciting!]. Leave the bottom [the 1 1/4"] board on, though [I'll explain why in a minute]. You will be able to see the edges, and they may look a bit unfinished, with little holes and such. If it doesn't bother you, save yourself alot of hard work and leave them just like that [you can remove the bottom board if you choose to skip this step]. If it does bother you... in order to finish them you'll need a bucket of water, a paint brush [just to fling the water], a small bowl of 2 parts mixed cement [still wet, obviously] to 1 part sand mixture, a rubbing stone and P90X-like muscles [this part is SO miserable]. Fling water on the edge, add a little of your paste mixture and rub your stone in a circular motion [always moving down and in clockwise direction to avoid chipping the edge]. You'll create a concrete lather [yup, crazy right?!] and that lather fills in the little holes and smooths the edges. It feels like you're basically sanding concrete [even though technically it's a lather] soooo, yea. Have fun [sarcasm]. This was soooo not fun, but just get through it because it's worth it! [are you noticing a theme here?! I promise, it's like childbirth... you eventually forget the pain!]

8. Now it's time to... wait some more. Let your edges dry again [4-5 days]. Remove the last form and have a little Woo-Hoo party because the hard part is finished! Now you will wait another 6 or 7 days to stain your counter top. I don't recommend going to your typical hardware store for the stain. I went to a real concrete place to get the good commercial grade stuff [I totally didn't fit in at all either.. the construction guys stared at me like, "why in the world would a concrete guy send his secretary to get his stain?" I don't think they see alot of DIY gals there!] Ask your concrete finisher where he gets his concrete materials, and that's where you'll want to go. Their were many color options, and the stain isn't cheap, but it's worth every penny [and you're still saving a ton of $$]. Ask the professionals all kinds of questions, just drive them crazy and make sure you get as much information as you can about this process! I used Lithochrome Chemstain Classic in Dark Walnut. It's a transparent stain, which I recommend if you want your counter top to have color variation.
9. Follow all safety instructions listed on your stain when applying. I used chemical grade gloves and a cloth and just began rubbing the stain onto the concrete in really large, circular motions. The concrete will absorb the stain in a totally random and gorgeous way... I applied about 7 coats of stain... that's a ton, but I wanted my counter tops really dark so I just kept going until I achieved the color I wanted. If you prefer to stick with the natural concrete color then you can skip this entire step!
10. I installed my sink at this point. Yes... I went a very long time without a kitchen sink.

11. Let the whole thing completely dry again and then you can seal it. There are several options for sealing. You can use a wax [ask the concrete guys about it], or a concrete sealer. I went for option #2, but I might switch to the wax this time... I haven't decided yet. You can research your options there and choose what's best for you!

The whole thing took about a month from beginning to end and cost right around $500 for 46 square feet of counter top... which is just under $11 a square foot. Yes. It was worth it!! If you choose to make counter tops, then you will most likely have a question or two [or five thousand]. Feel free to email me or leave me a comment if you need additional information!

Monday (P)inspiration: Random Gorgeousness

I know, gorgeousness isn't a word. But that non-word describes these rooms perfectly. I decided not to have a topic this week... it's all just great eye candy! I love the crisp, classic and ultra modern look of this room. I also like that it's a library and dining room... brilliant!

That chandelier. That mirror. The couch. Do you ever love a room so much that you pin it twice accidentally? I've pinned this one from two different angles, not realizing that it was the same room! Love, love [love] it all!

Neutral colors, industrial finishes and clean lines all combine perfectly to make a stunning kitchen. I want it!!

Alright. So much that I love about this little corner! The chair is amazing. That light is so much fun, but completely simple. The gallery wall is perfect. What a lovely moment for this room!

I may have included this on a (P)inspiration post already. [If so... let's just enjoy it again!] I just ooo & awwwe everytime I see this room. I love how they've used old materials in a very new, fresh new way. Such a stunning space...

My Kitchen Update: Concrete Counter tops

Alright... so I've been blogging for nine months and haven't posted one single photo of my kitchen yet [for several reasons]. The main one is that it isn't finished. I have several more projects that I'd like to complete. However, I've been doing some soul searching and here's what I discovered: it may never be completely done [we started three years ago]. I have this thing where I always want to do one more project [and now that I'm on Pinterest I keep finding more and more fabulous ideas... so it's only going to get worse!] Therefore, I'm just going to document where we are now and you can join me for the rest of the journey! Sooo, let the pictures and projects begin!

We built our home almost seven years ago, and the whole thing was "contractor grade." [If you aren't familiar with the term, that's just fancy-speak for B-O-R-I-N-G]. About three years ago we decided to add a little personality to the kitchen, so the first thing to go was the plain-jane counter top. I've noticed that concrete counter tops are becoming increasingly popular these days, and with good reason. Here's why we chose them: granite was definately popular and gorgeous... but not in our budget, soapstone was what I really wanted... but not in our budget, Corian countertops are super durable and beautiful... but not in our budget [are you sensing a pattern here?!] and last but not least... laminate made the budget but that's what we already had.

I wanted something cutting-edge, timeless and inexpensive. Hmmm. Sounds impossible, right?! [But it wasn't!] After much research, we decided to make our own concrete counter tops [and when I say "we decided," I mean "I talked my super hero hubby into it."]! Well, it's been three years since we completed the project, and I still LOVE them. The entire project ended-up costing less than laminate counter tops would have, so it was really a great economical choice.

However [and this is a big however], it was not an easy project. In fact, it was the hardest DIY project that we've ever done [ever, seriously... in the history of ever.]. Did that scare most of you off? Well, if you're still reading this then I'm assuming that you are you still interested. I have completed the tutorial post on How to Make Concrete Counter Tops, so check it out if you want to learn more! But first, I suggest reading the following pros & cons of having concrete counter tops:

Here's an HONEST list of what I do and don't like about them after three years of wear and tear:

1. I love the way they look [in general]. A very solid, high end feel.

2. I love the cost. Less than laminate. Yea, I know. [That's a big one.]

3. I love that they are easy to keep clean.

4. I love that I don't have to worry about stains or spills [but mine are dark which helps].
5. I don't love that they can chip. I have several little chips in my countertop as I type this.
6. I love that I know how to fix the chips myself [bonus of a DIY project... you are your own handy man!].
7. I don't love that they can scratch. [I haven't tried to fix scratches yet, but I'll let you know how it works when I do.]
8. I don't love that they need to be resealled every-other year. [I haven't resealed mine yet... thus the chips and scratches.]
9. I didn't love that it was the hardest DIY project ever! But [much like childbirth], looking back it was totally worth it :)
That's all I can think of for now... I'll update this list if anything else comes to mind!

Monday (P)inspiration: An Inspired Color Palette

This week I'm focusing on those perfect color palettes that keep popping up in Pinterest. Each of these images is from a wonderful site called Design Seeds. If you are hunting for the perfect palette, check it out... it's really amazing!

I'm starting with this palette because these colors are so much fun. And the color for 2012 is Tangerine so here's an amazing color palette for it!

Nonetheless, in my home I'm staying a little quieter with my colors... so this is my favorite [I think]. I'm ready to do a [thrifty] overhaul in our kitchen/dining/living room and these colors make my heart sing!

I love getting to see each color palette's inspiration!

And most of the color combinations come from nature. I've discovered that if God puts a color palette together... it's perfect every time [duh]. In fact, I always share that little tip with my clients: look to nature and you can't go wrong.

These colors are just so fresh and clean. Love them!

Since I Can't Move Forward...

let's just take a look back, shall we? Still having computer issues, so I'm thinking now is a good time to highlight the top-viewed posts from 2011! [I promise to reveal a super cool project next week... even if I have to show up at Best Buy, hi-jack an open computer and write it right there in the showroom, lol!]

So, let's begin our little Salvage Savvy top 5 countdown, shall we!?

Thanks to Pinterest, my post entitled Monday (P)inspiration: Organization came in #5! I just love organizational ideas. Maybe someday I'll even get organized myself [but until then I'll just look at the pretty pictures and sigh...]

Post #4 is my Zebra Striped Foyer table. I just love this table because it walks the line between funky and sophisticated, but in a very subdued way [hey, much like me!].

Ok, so I'm going to be really honest and tell you that I kind of didn't even want to share Post #3, DIY Artwork. It's kind of like giving away Grandma's secret recipe... not sure why, but it's true! However, I'm glad I did and so many have enjoyed it!

I'm so thankful that I didn't pass up this super awful dresser at Goodwill, because it's brought me so much joy! Post #2 is my Vintage Dresser Makeover which is probably my favorite piece to date. I use it daily and just love how unique it is!

And now [drum roll please], 2011's #1 Post... My Overscale Hand-Antiqued Mirror. This has been another Pinterest favorite, and I am thrilled! It was a little project that I hatched in my brain and was able to make it happen, so I am especially proud of it.

Monday (P)inspiration: Inspiration for my 2012 goals

I'm not really big on making New Year's resolutions; however, I do think that this is a great time to celebrate accomplishments from last year [like starting this lovely blog back in April!!] and re-evaluate what could be improved upon in the future [and that list is a loooong one!].

First of all, I'd like to get more organized in my daily life, and this idea for make ahead crockpot meals from Mama and Baby Love is just great!! A few hours of prep for 6 meals... sounds good to me.

And then... there's my pantry. Yikes. I lost all control of it during the holidays. Everytime I see this photo from The House of Smiths I am filled with pantry envy. Great inspiration though

And my laundry room isn't lookn' too great either. This photo from Martha Stewart makes me want to get started today [kind of].

Then there are the personal goals, like establishing a routine daily quiet time. I love the idea of getting these daily devotionals from the Proverbs 31 Ministries. This is something I really, really want to improve upon, because while I know that everything goes so much better when I've had my quiet time each day... somehow I still don't do it all the time. Crazy, right?!

And the same thing goes for exercising each day. I think I handed my daily workout time over to the blog last April, and it's definately showing up on my [everything]. I just need to read this each day and then go bust it for at least 30 minutes!

Finally, I really want to eat healthier... but not boring healthy stuff. I'm really going to focus on finding more yummy recipes that really are good for me. Yup. It can happen, and here's proof from Weight Watchers! [Btw- I'm expecting Pinterest to help me out big-time with this goal!!]

Really, I promise. I'm just having rotten luck with my technology lately. Apparently my computer doesn't enjoy the holidays because just after Thanksgiving my modem died, and then two days after Christmas the laptop crashed... yup, crashed. While deciding what to do about the laptop we received a letter informing us that our internet service will no longer be available in two weeks. [we live in a rural area with very few good options for reliable internet]
Soooooo. I've got some decisions to make... and I need to make them fast! In the meantime I've got to learn more about this little tablet of mine, because it looks like it's going to be my only option for a bit... speaking of which, sorry there are no pretty pictures on this post. I don't know how to insert them from my tablet. See why this is a problem?! [I should probably play Angry Birds less and read the manual more, lol!]
I promise to do the best I can in the meantime to keep posting [rather than sit and pout about it like I did last week!]. Thanks for hanging in there with me... 2012 is off to an awesome start [is there a sarcasm font for that sentence?!]!

Monday (P)inspiration: Christmas Storage Ideas

Yes... Christmas was yesterday. No, I'm not taking my decorations down just yet. Nonetheless, I want to do a better job of organizing them this year... and I need to figure out my ideas before I'm ready to actually tear everything down [and dream of springtime, haha]. Therefore, I went of into the land of Pinterest in search of great storage ideas. As always, each photo is linked to its source!

I will be doing this. Egg cartons for small fragile ornaments, and plasic cups for larger ones. But how do you keep all those cups from moving around, and what if you want an ornament from the bottom...

No worries, the cups are glued to the cardboard! Over at Design a la Mode there's a great tutorial on how to make this awesome DIY ornament organizer.

Here's another super, super simple storage solution. Just wrap lights around cardboard and tape your end down. Much easier than detangling them each year, right?!

We have quite a few Christmas traditions in our home, and here are a few:

First, at some point in December we must watch each of these movies at least once:

A Christmas Story

White Christmas

It's a Wonderful Life

Rudolph

How the Grinch Stole Christmas [original animated version only... sorry Jim Carrey].

And then... each Christmas Eve we watch Fiddler on the Roof.

Not sure why or how this one became our Christmas Eve tradition, but it's a great story!

And before bed each child gets to open one present [which is always pajamas and an ornament for their tree]. Then there is a family gift to open, which is usually a movie and/or a new board game.

[this photo is actually about 4 years old... but I just had to include it because it's so stinkn' cute!]

Finally, the kids set out their treats for Santa and his reindeer. [Yes, I've convinced them that Santa gets tired of too much milk... what he needs for a long night is a little caffeine and a nice, cold Coke!]

Finally, on Christmas morning before opening any presents, we begin our day by reading the story of Christ's birth from the Bible. It's a good reminder of why we are celebrating in the first place :)

To make it more interactive for the kids, as we read the scriptures they "act it out" with their manger people!

If you're like me, then you've finished decorating your home... and now it's time to start wrapping. I'll just tell you that I have a love/hate relationship with gift wrap because I love to make things look beautiful; however, I'm super practical [how much time do I want to spend wrapping when it's all going to be torn off] and thrifty [how much $ do I want to spend on wrapping paper & supplies when it's all going to be thrown away?]. Therefore, I've searched high & low on Pinterest for affordable, simple and beautiful gift wrap ideas. As always, each photo is linked to its source, so please click away for more information!

Another really simple gift idea, but the stamped names are just too cute & fun!

Brown paper bags [boring]. These brown paper bags [adorable!]. I love the idea of transforming something so very plain into something so very cute... this is one of my favorites!

Of course I had to throw-in some gift wrapping organization ideas! My gift wrapping area looks... well, let's just say... not like this. These are such simple ideas, I really [really] need to do this and get my area organized.

One more idea. I love that all of the "stuff" is contained in a basket, and I really love those hooks to hang storage on the side. Hmmmm... how will I get organized?!

My Christmas [Room] Tour...

...but what about an entire home tour like the rest of the bloggers? You ask. My reply: Sorry, but I'm just not that ambitious right now. Maybe next year you'll get the whole thing [ but I've gotta leave something to the imagination, right?!]. However, until then... I did straighten-up [parts of] one room for a few photos to share!

I keep my colors pretty simple: silver, white and green with little blue accents. I love filling bowls with ornaments. It's a great trick if you want to showcase a special ornament [the blue ornament is my favorite, but it's really old so I don't trust hanging it on the tree...]

And here's the television [which is also a bit of a focal point in the room]. We are honest with ourselves and with others and accept the fact that we enjoy watching tv. Therefore, rather than hide it... we choose to dress it up instead!

Here is a little trick that makes me really happy: use stocking hangers to display ornaments [they're never strong enough to hold the weight of stocking anyway!]. I love this JOY moment... see the ornament with the tag? It was made by my super sweet nieces and I'll never take that tag off because everytime I see it I think of how much I love them. In my opinion it's those little things that make the holidays even more special!

And here's our tree. Yes, the angel is bowing her head in prayer [not slouching over because I need to prop her up again!]. I don't go crazy about making my tree perfect. Maybe that's because I have a one year old who likes to pull-off ornaments [probably not... ].

I have a metal tree on the wall and I decided to make it festive this year. First I added ornaments. Then a couple strands of silver garland. That's when my super hero hubby said, "You do realize that isn't a real Christmas tree, right?" I think he was worried that I would add lights as well!

More Christmas cheer on the China Cabinet. [Here's an I Spy Moment: find the tiny yellow soccer ball. My son had stuck it in the silver bowl of ornaments pictured above, so I moved it to get it out of the photo. It managed to sneek into this one instead!]

Yes, you've seen the hanging ornaments already. Here they are again!

And finally... another simple decorating idea: fill vases with silver ornaments, then add one bright ornament for a pop of color. This little vintage pink-striped ornament is just perfect [to me at least]!

Create a Tree Branch Candle Chandelier

Last month I created this guest tutorial for Craft Gossip and I'm so excited to share it here on Salvage Savvy today!! I just love this chandelier in my office, it's so pretty and festive... and is made from items that you probably have around your house already [tree branch, spray paint, yarn, glue, ribbon, ornaments & flameless candles]... not very fancy stuff, but it all combines to make a spectacular piece!

Here's how I made it...

First, begin by selecting a branch [this sounds simple enough… but I walked around waaaay too long searching for the perfect one!]. I liked this one because it had bark falling off which added great texture and interest.

I dusted it off and spray painted it using a Brushed Nickel color. Doesn't the bark look amazing in silver?!

Next I made the white yarn “candle holders.” For this you’ll need:

-100% Cotton yarn

-Plain-old School glue with a little water mixed in [about a 5:1 ratio]

-Balloons blown-up to the size of a large grapefruit and then covered in Vaseline

-A plastic table cloth [or just use a trash bag like me if you’re fancy!] because it gets messy.

Begin by dipping about 24” sections of your yarn into the glue and then squeeze off the excess back into the bowl. Now immediately begin wrapping your balloon. You can’t mess this up, wrap away in any and every direction making sure to keep each layer tight on the balloon. Just make sure to leave an opening big enough to squeeze your candles into it [I didn’t really do that, soooo yea… that’s important.].

Once you’re done, tuck the last piece underneath another so it’s not hangin’ out all loosey-goosey. Then roll the wrapped balloon around in glitter until it is nice and sparkly.

Now set it aside and wait for it to dry completely [which is the hardest part for me because I’m impatient].

Once your balloons are dry, deflate the balloon inside and pull it out…so easy!

Next, I screwed 2 Mug hooks into the ceiling based upon my branch measurements. *Note: I chose a light branch… if you choose a heavy branch then you’ll want to use ceiling toggle bolts instead to make sure it’s safe.

Then I decided how low I wanted the branch and tied ribbon “loops” onto each hook at that length, which allowed me to simply slip my branch into the hanging loops.

Now you’re ready to assemble everything! Just thread ribbon into each yarn candle holder and ornament and tie them at the top of the branch. Be sure to arrange it all at varying lengths for interest.

And I added a little birdy to my branch… I secured it onto the branch with hot glue, but I also attached it to the Mug hook using clear fishing wire for extra safety.

Finally, insert your flameless candles, turn them on and enjoy your beautiful new creation!! *Another safety note: ONLY use flamesless candles for this project!!*

I love this project because it can be used in so many different ways and for all seasons, but for now... it's all about Christmas :)

Here's another inexpensive Christmas decorating idea [and it's super easy... bonus!].

Simply string ornaments onto ribbon and hang them from your curtain rod, then add garland to the top & ta-dah... you're done!

It really adds alot of Christmas cheer to the room. Anytime you can get a big impact for little money and even less effort... that's a wonderful thing, so I thought I'd share it with my wonderful readers :)

When you don't have a mantel...

Yes, we have a fireplace. No we have not yet installed a mantel. Please don't judge [after all, we've only lived here for 7 years...]. Every Christmas I say, "Next Christmas we'd better have a mantel." Nonetheless, here I sit, manteless once again! Now you see how much "pull" I have in this family [hehe, I'm sure my Super Hero Hubby just laughed out loud!]

Therefore, I channel all of my would-be mantel decor engery & ideas onto this fine little foyer table instead [it works for me... for now... I guess].

I'm generally drawn to silver & white Christmas decor; however, you just can't deny the drama that gold brings to the holidays. There's just something regal and timeless about a golden Christmas. That's why I have a little gold area in my home each year. This year it's the foyer. I mixed in a little silver to keep it from feeling too formal. Also, I really like the traditional gold decor with the contemporary zebra print table. It's all about balance.

I think my favorite part is this cute little blinged-out reindeer. I just put a bracelet around her neck for a little somethin' extra!

I also really like the gold beaded-strand that is draped on the mirror. It's a nice alternative to garland.

Doesn't it feel like a gorgeous necklace for the mirror?! And, the mirror reflects it, giving you twice the bling!

So- there you go. My golden [non-mantel] mantel. Do you prefer a gold or silver Christmas? Or both [like me!].

I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas [Table]

Today I'm sharing photos of my [very white] Christmas table decor! I'm excited about it because it's proof that gorgeous holiday decoration doesn't have to be expensive.

I already had the greenery and white table cloth, but everything else came from either Goodwill or The Dollar Store! See those really large glass candle holders... large flower vases from Goodwill. And the small faux mercury glass candles holders... little glass bowls from Goodwill [just spritz water inside them and then immediately spray a light coat of Krylon's looking glass spray paint inside them. Let it dry and repeat the process about 3 times for desired transparency].

Those adorable mirrored christmas trees... Dollar store [What?!]. Ok, so I lied because I just noticed the crystal candle holders... they were a wedding gift so I had them already too! But I did make the little "snow balls" that are on the candle holders, and I'll tell you how to make them soon [so, so easy!]. And finally, those little shimmery pears were a Dollar Store find too [but I've had them for years so I doubt you'll find them now, sorry!]. And that's it! Now get creative and create a thrifty winter wonderland in your home too :)

I'm Back, I'm Back!

Guess who has a working modem and a big ol' smile on her face?! [Yup. Me :)] I really missed you all and am so happy to be bloggn' again! Are you wondering what I was doing during my blog-less week [most likely not, but I'm sharing anyway...] well, here are a few hints:

1. It involved taking down almost all of my decor.

2. And then I got to clean and dust my entire home in preparation for "the" task.

2. Next, I enjoyed lugging gi-normous plastic tubs up the stairs, unloading them and then lugging them back down again.

3. My family & dining room were a disaster for approximately 2 days... and I mean distaster. [like, I had one single path cleared for us to get from the couch to the hall... it looked like an episode of Hoarders.]

4. I then proceeded to move approximately 35 items to approximately 10 locations [each] in search of perfection. Yes, that's about 5,987 different design options to ponder [I'm not good at math...].

5. When I swept my floors [again] the dust pan was filled with pine needles and glitter.

6. I may have yelled "Ba-Humbug" once or twice...
7. When I finished it all, my house needed to be cleaned and dusted again [so not fair!].

Have you guessed it yet? Of course you did... I was Deckin' my Halls all week long [fa la la la la, lalalala]!! Yes, it's alot of work, but I just love, love [love] Christmas. Because seriously, how magical is it when your dust pan dirt gets turned into glitter? It truly is "the most wonderful time of the year." Soooo, for the next few weeks I'm going to be celebrating Christmas with gorgeous and thrifty decor ideas here at Salvage Savvy.

I'm. So. Excited.

Monday (P)inspiration [kind of]: Gorgeous Greys

Well, it's always something- isn't it?! I need to begin by saying RIP to my modem. It died on 11/25/11 [I didn't even get to say good-bye *tears*]. Soooo, until my new one arrives I'll have to get my posts out by hi-jacking friend's and family member's computers. And unfortunately, I couldn't log into my FB account on this particular hi-jacked computer... and I get to Pinterest via FB... soooo, I just got all of today's photos from House Beautiful. But I'll pin them all asap if that counts :)

Anyway- needless to say, all of this computer stuff is making me feel very grey; but no worries, I've decided to make the best of it and focus on gorgeous grey rooms! Enjoy.

Oh. my. goodness. Off to a good start, huh?! I'm in love with this room. The sunburst, that rustic table... and those chairs!

How elegant is this area? The antiqued mirror, perfectly subtle and completely uber-fabulous wallpaper, and that amazing furniture [is it a table or dresser? I can't decide]. So, so pretty!

This room looks calm, sophisticated and comfortable- but it also feels bright. What a great example of incorporating grey without going dark or dreary!

Another wonderful example of the same idea... I seriously want this family room!

And look at this media room done right. I could start naming what I love, but I'd have to list it all... flawless!

What I'm Makin': Sun Dried Cherry and Cranberry Salsa

Yup. It's a food post here @ Salvage Savvy [what?!]. I'm guessing that no one's thinking about thrifty DIY decor this week. Soooo, since we're all pretty much in "Thanksgiving mode" right now, I'm just going with it and sharing an easy recipe that is super-d-duper delicious!

** I discovered this salsa recipe last year in Country Living; however, I've altered the original recipe a little because I wanted mine less chunky and more saucey [which pretty much describes how I wish I looked like in my skinny jeans, too!]. Oh, and you've got to check-out their Cornbread Dressing with with Sage and Pork. Best. Dressing. Ever. I don't change a thing and it's perfect!!

Sun-Dried Cherry and Cranberry Salsa
1 12 oz. bag fresh cranberries
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 cup dried cherries, soaked in hot water for 20 minutes and drained
1/4 cup orange juice
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground pepper

1. Combine cranberries, water and sugar in medium saucepan and bring to a boil, boil rapidly until berries pop. Pour mixture into a large bowl and blend on medium for about 40-60 seconds. You want it to be saucey but not soupy: make sure there are still whole cranberries left.
2. Add all remaining ingredients into bowl and mix. If you make this ahead of time you can chill it until you're ready to serve... but I set it out early because I think its best at room temperature.

Isn't that easy?! And I promise that it's really, really good. Put it on your plate right next to the stuffing and eat them together- Yum.O. Enjoy!

Monday (P)inspiration: Gorgeous Thanksgiving Tables

I'm a creature of habit. Which is why last week's weird blogging schedule was... well, weird. And now Thanksgiving is on Thursday so it's going to be yet another week of weird-ness [but the good kind!]. Anyway, I've decided to embrace the season and dedicate my posts to all things Thanksgiving. Today I found amazing tablescapes via Pinterest to inspire you as you prepare your table for the great feast!

This one is my favorite. You know I love incorporating natural elements into seasonal decor, and this table is a perfect example of that. So, so pretty. [Where will the food go, you ask? Who cares... oooo & awww over your table first, then figure out that little detail of the food later :)]

Mis-matched china. [love] Simple, gorgeous and edible name cards. [love, love] Easy table decor that looks incredible. [love, love & love!]

Alright, you have noticed that I love neutrals- but Thanksgiving is a great reason to pull-out the bright reds and deep oranges without making any long term commitments. This royal red Thanksgiving table is so festive, beautiful and cheery!

Speaking of neutrals... here's a gorgeous table that is simple and elegant. I really do love it. [And I think this one even has room to set a turkey!]

Here's a great example of keeping it simple with natural elements and then adding the drama with candles. BTW, I have this little obsession with leaves... so this table is extra perfect in my eyes!

What a great, simple centerpiece. So pretty. [and I could even do this last minute... since basically everything I do is last minute, that's a big plus for me!]

Of course I had to include a few kids' tables!

This one is my favorite because it's super cute; however, it's also super practical and fun. And really folks, let's face it... all the kids care about is fun anyway. I love the drawn-on placemats too, what a cute idea [and it's the only placemat that won't end-up on the floor!].

Check-out this turkey centerpiece! So cute. I'm pretty sure that I'm not patient enough to make it, but this popcorn turkey is so adorable and really is a good idea for keeping the kiddos occupied until the real turkey is ready.

Ok. This one is obviously a snapshot straight out of a mother's imagination of what Thanksgiving "should" look like. In real life those sails would be knocked off the table in no time. And you can see that the kid in the green is about to rip his adorable little Pilgrim hat off [and he's gettin' paid to keep it on, so our kids' hats don't stand a chance!]. Despite all of the obvious "not gonna happen" moments shown here... I still love it! So cute :)

Stenciling for Newbies...

Five years ago I did a little stencil project for a client [and I mean little... like a tiny boarder on one wall]. Now, I consider myself a fairly handy gal- but upon completion of that project I collapsed to my knees, threw my hands into the air and proclaimed, "With God as my witness... I shall never stencil again!" [ok, I didn't actually do or say that, but I was super frustrated and didn't stencil anything else again.]

Soooo... imagine how I felt when Regina with Royal Design Studio contacted me asking if I'd be interested in doing a stencil review [ummm... me?!]. I was hesitant to say the least. That is, until I saw the website and all of its gorgeous designs. Seriously folks- beautiful stuff [I had to get-me one of those stencils]! And choosing just one was like being forced to choose a favorite child [ok, that's totally exaggerating- but it was really hard]. So, after many days of angst I finally selected the Chez Sheik pattern... then I was left to anxiously await its arrival [while wondering what I'd gotten myself into!].
Now, I can't really say this is a DIY post, because me telling you how to stencil is like Kim K. giving marriage tips [I know, I know...low-blow, sorry Kim!]. However, I do really [really] love how my project turned out, so I'll just share what I learned along the way.

First of all, I used Mandi's post from Vintage Revivals entitled Wall Stenciling 101 to get started. It's a great tutorial. Then, I read the instructions that came with the stencil [Who really reads the instructions?! I'll tell you who... me. Because I was afraid and wanted as much information as possible!]. I liked their tips and instructions because they were written informally like a blog's tutorial rather than a bunch of technical mumbo-jumbo. Finally, armed with all of my newly found book-smarts, I attempted to stencil for the first time in five years.

And... it really wasn't bad! Much to my surprise it went so very smoothly [I never cried or even threw a fit once, lol!]. This stencil had all kinds of marks that enabled me to line it up properly and easily which makes all the difference in the world!

So, here are my little newbie stenciling tips:

1. Start small. I didn't tackle an entire room or huge wall... I chose to do a small project for my first try and I'm glad because now I feel that doing an entire wall would be no problem!

2. Don't use too much paint: be sure to unload your roller as much as possible... just like in decorating, less is more.

3. Mandi's post mentioned that she preferred Purdy's White Dove Roller to a foam roller. I purchased and used both, and have to say that I actually liked the foam better... so to each her own!

4. Don't let paint build-up on the edges of your stencil design. If you see them getting gunky [yes, that's an official stencil term used by professional stencilors only!] stop what you're doing and clean them off. If you don't, you'll regret it.

5. Thin your paint just a little bit with tintable glaze. It made clean-up sooo much easier.

6. Speaking of which... clean your stencil asap. Don't put it in the bathtub submerged in water then get distracted and forget about it until the next day. 'Cuz the water might drain out of the tub leaving you with dried-up blue paint in your bathtub. Then you would have to scrape the dried paint off your stencil and out of tub. I'm not saying it happened to me. Just that it could happen to someone.[Me].

7. Be patient. I'm not good a this one, but it really is important.

8. If you get a little frustrated by the imperfections [and there will be imperfections], just stand back and look at your work from across the room. It will be so. very. beautiful. And that will give you the motivation you need to keep going!

9. When doing touch-ups [and you will be doing touch-ups], it was much easier for me to touch-up the wall color part [for me that was the white part]. Not sure why, I'm just sayn' it was.

We Need To Talk

Yup. It's time for a little heart-to-heart. Have you ever really liked a blog and then suddenly IT happens? You know what I mean… all of the awesome eye candy in which you’ve become accustomed to and those amazing DIY projects [that are so clever and inexpensive they make you want to cry] you look forward to each week get replaced with… well, stuff [too many reviews, giveaways of things you’ll never use, and sponsored posts]. Yes, there are still amazing morsels, but now you must sift through the “noise” to find them. And as a result, the blog that you once read almost daily becomes the blog that you check-in with once a week.

Yea, well- I never want Salvage Savvy to be that blog. Which is why as I [attempt to] move into the next phase, I’m making you these promises today:

1. Even though I hope to monetize the blog [who knows if it’ll work, though!] I will never clutter it up with too many ads or sponsors.

2. I will only review products that I honestly believe you will want to know about, and I will always be 100% honest with you.

3. I will never put a sponsor above you for any reason.

4. I will only do giveaways for products that I would want myself [and I’m super picky- I’ve only entered two giveaways my entire life]. If you see a giveaway on Salvage Savvy, it’s truly something I love.

5. I won’t ever waste your time with “noise.”

So, if you notice a few changes around here please don’t push the panic button! Personally, I always resist change. Do You Display Them?

'Cuz I don't. Nope. Not me... I am too picky about my interior decor. Well, alright... I must admit that I've changed, because now I do. What in the world am I talking about?! Sports Photos. If anyone in your family plays a sport then you probably have a ton of action shots [and most likely almost all of them are stuck inside your computer or camera because who really prints photos anymore?!] Well, I recently had a change of heart about displaying those photographs and decided to search through my files for a few good shots of my [super awesome] son. You see, he loves all sports and is an excellent athlete [of course this proud momma has to add that little bit of extra information :)]. Anyway, I decided to begin a sports gallery wall for him in his room to celebrate his accomplishments; however, I wanted to do it in a very sophisiticated way. In order to keep it classic I chose to keep the colors monochromatic and to make the photos look like old, vintage prints. Also, I used all floating glass frames for several reasons:

1. Without mats I'm free to arrange the photos any way I'd like, and can use any size prints.

2. I'm sure I'll add more photos to his gallery in the future and I don't want to worry about finding the exact same color mats.

3. I had them lying around already so it saved time and money :)

So here's what I did: First of all, does your camera have a burst mode? At the store the salesperson was all like, "This camera is great for action shots because it's got an incredible burst mode." And I was all like, "Ummm. Ok. Awesome." [But in my head I was like, "What am I ever going to do with that handy feature?"] Well...six months later... !yay! I figured out how to utilize it. I took a series of photos showing his mad-soccer-skilz and then printed them out to look like an old film strip. Now you can see him tearing up the field anytime you look at his wall. Yup, he had a big smile on his face when I showed him this series of photos, which put a big smile in my heart too.

And then I included this photo of him suiting-up the first time ever before his first football practice. He was so nervous [and so was I, frankly]. I included this photo because it's a great moment in his "history" and helps make his sports wall feel more personal.

And then I included the classic "bustin' through the line, can't be stopped, tough guy" photo. I used Photobucket's free photo software editing for all of these, and both of these are the "old photo" option under the retro tab.

Finally, I included a phrase from one of his favorite scriptures. I chose it because it's a constant reminder that the Lord is our true source of strength and power. Plus, it's from a song that he sings at church every Sunday, so I knew that he would really relate to it.

And that's it! I'm so pleased with how it turned out... a timeless, classic sports gallery wall that will undoubtedly grow as the years pass! Now, do you display your sports photos [if so, please share your ideas for making it interesting!]?

Free Advice Friday- Getting that old, musty smell out of furniture

It's Free Advice Friday time... woo-hoo! Today's question is from Heather who wanted to know how to get rid of that old, icky smell that so often accompanies salvaged furniture.
Well Heather, I did a little research and here is what I discovered: first of all, don't bother with the furniture polish. Using that to get rid of odor is like spraying perfume on yourself after running a marathon [ewww.]. Instead, use Murphy's Oil Soap according to directions to clean the wood thoroughly. Then put it in a dry location and let it really, really dry-out [setting it out in the hot sun is best]. Now, in "the land of perfect" that will do the trick and your salvaged piece will have a fresh, lovely scent. However, I don't live in that land... [in fact, I hardly ever even get to visit it] so if you're like me that musty smell will hang-on and you'll have to continue working. Here are a few more extreme approaches to try:
Pine Sol: 2 gallons water with 1/2 cup Pine Sol.
Bleach and water: Wash it down again using 1 part bleach to 2 parts water, or you can dilute it more if you aren't comfortable with that strong of a solution... just be safe & smart.

Vinegar and water solution: Washing it with this solution is less harsh than the bleach but it is still effective.
Charcoal: Place unused charcoal briquettes [yup, like you use to grill] in a bowl and place inside your piece. Keep all drawers & cabinets shut for at least 24 hours for best results. You don't even have to throw them away after you're done- they can still be used [Not sure I would though. My mind would trick my mouth into thinking that the chicken tastes musty...]
Kitty Litter: Natural clay kitty litter to be exact. Same drill as the charcoal: just don't throw it on the grill when you're done.

Baking Soda: I don't know about you, but I love baking soda because it works for just about everything. Once again... put it in a container inside your furniture just like the others, but disguard when finished.
Coffee: Weird, right?! Ground, dry coffee will work as well. [Please just don't use the good Starbucks stuff... cuz' that's just wrong.]

Surely you will only need to use one or two of these methods; however, if you try every idea and it's still too funky to bring into your home... I don't know what to tell you, maybe you should take it to Goodwill and let someother poor sap figure it out ;)

Adding Detail to Plain Roman Shades

I'm almost done with my son's little bedroom redo [and by "little" I mean, "supposed to be little- but I somehow ended up changing everything..."]. My latest project was to add stripes to his super plain roman shade. It truly was SO easy, but added alot of personality to the room [especially considering the project only cost $2.60].

Here's what it looked like before... which was fine, but I never liked the roman shade's exposed plastic top; however, I didn't want to add a valence to the window because I wanted to keep it really casual.

Plus... six years ago I managed to drip one drop of paint on them, so I wanted to hide it [obviously it didn't bother me too much since it took 6 YEARS to do anything!] .

I purchased some ribbon [Super hero hubby saw the spools and said, "You're not putting ribbon in our son's room, are you?" My response: " Ummm, no. Well, yes. Just think if them as shiny stripes though."] Then I measured-out where I wanted the "stripes" to go and used liquid stitches to adhere the ribbon to the fabric. And you may notice that the width between the ribbons is exactly the width of the ruler... that saved me alot of time/measuring!

Next, to secure the ends, simply leave enough ribbon so that you can fold it under and hot glue it down as shown.

Here's an example. I used sheers to [hopefully] prevent fraying .

Finally, after reinstalling the shade I added a ribbon across the top to hide that boring plastic piece. Yup. I hot glued the ribbon [oh, I mean shiny stripes...] right onto the plastic, and it instantly looked 1,000 times better.

That's all. $2.60 for two spools of ribbon and you're done [ok, ok... I already had the hot glue gun & liquid stitch stuff... so if you don't have it, add like a whopping $8 to that total.]

And here's how the roman shade looks when pulled up, which is how it stays most of the time [because really, look at that view... no matter how great my ribbon looks it's not better than that!!].

Monday (P)inspiration: Get Comfy [and look fabulous]

For today's (P)inspiration I decided to find rooms that combine oodles of comfort with oodles style. These are the two questions I asked myself while selecting rooms: 1. is it beautiful? 2. could I curl-up and read a book and/or fall asleep comfortably? Here's what I found!

Rustic walls, an elegant chandelier and contemporary finishes... combine all that design goodness with a comfy couch and I say "yes, please!"

I love, love [love] this little reading corner. That velvet chaise lounge is amazing and just pulls you in for a moment of relaxation with a good book!

A sun-drenched window, big over-stuffed pillows, a stool to hold your coffee [or hot tea for me]. I want to nap here... who wouldn't have heavenly dreams in this cozy corner?!

This is a great example of creating a relaxed and comfortable room while looking fabulous. It's so beautiful proof that high style doesn't need to be intimidating... gorgeous!

Happy colors, cozy fabrics, big pillows and fabulous style! Love it all.

This room looks well-loved, completely informal and super comfortable... yet it still looks so very stylish thanks to that amazing wall [which is artwork, if you ask me!]. This is proof that when you make a big style statement, it will speak even when your pillows aren't fluffed perfectly :)

My Followers Rock: Exhibit F

I just love doing this series because I get to thank my Followers by shining a spotlight on a few of their wonderful blogs that I discover by scouting out my list [and I always love discovering new blogs!]. Did you guys know that I don't just decorate stuff... nope. I eat too [and waaay to much waaay too often]. I always love finding new recipes, and here are a few blogs that have amazing food!!

You. guys. You've got to check out Caramel Potatoes. I found some amazing food there, like these Caramel Apple Nachos [I know, right?!... oh my goodness!]. Kyra and Jocelyn are a mother/daughter duo and you will sooo want to see what they're up to!

Then I found Jennifer at Peas & Crayons. She has tons of really yummy and healthy dishes. That is a tough combination to find and Jennifer makes it look delicious... like these Healthified Somosas. I seriously want to make these tonight!

And Amber shared how she made this gorgeous homemade Sushi at Salt Tree. I love sushi, and this looks amazing! She's got all kinds of yummy-goodness happening over there, so be sure to check her out!

Finally... this isn't cooking, but I had to share it anyway! NeeCee at Pine Creek Style has all kinds of good ideas for the home, like this Weekly Chore List. It is soooo good. When it comes to getting things really [really] clean, sometimes I just need someone else to boss me around in my own home [which is probably why I'm a big fan of Martha Stewart]. NeeCee's list is a-maz-ingly specific and left me feeling like I should go clean something right now!!

Make a kids' dresser fun with magnetic paint!

I repainted my son's dresser and now it looks like this:

Really, the possibilities are endless because I used magnetic paint on the drawers!

This is how the dresser started... it's nice, but we changed his room and it didn't work with the new look. I wanted something industrial and boy-ish. Soooo, I painted it. I preped it using the same techniques listed in How to Paint a Dresser.

However, instead of regular paint on the drawers I used magnetic paint. It's kind of thick and requires at least three coats to actually work, so if you want a smooth finish, I recommend applying the paint with a smooth roller. However, because I was going for an industrial look, I chose to use a brush and kind of go crazy by painting every-which-way. The thickness of the paint and my wild brush strokes created a textured base. You can [kind of] see it in this photo.

Once I had my base coat on the drawers, it was time to achieve "my vision" through paint, hard work and magic. Well, my first attempt was not magical [at all]. If you missed the post and want to see the ugliness that followed... then check out When a DIY Project Turns Ugly [literally]. I had to redo the whole thing [which put me in a really great mood]. To achieve a more refined, [but still industrial] look I decided to paint over the black magnetic paint with a dark brown color. It was definately less harsh than the black base. Then, I took Rub n' Buff and applied a thin coat [using my fingers because that's how it works best]. I saw that going side to side with long strokes worked best. I wanted it to have an irregular texture, so if it was a little heavy in one area then I went lighter next to it... you just have to eye-ball it and adjust as necessary. And for the exterior of the dresser I chose to go with a calmer, gentler color the second time: I used a high gloss navy blue paint. I think that paint worked because it helped "ground" the dresser and because navy blue is a cool, dark color it really complimented the silver drawers. And the glossy finish also helped ensure that the industrial look didn't turn "dirty" [like it did in my first attempt].

Next, it was time to create the dresser adornments. I purchased magnetic paper from Walmart, and spray painted it red[ish]. Well, the paper didn't like my spray paint [it's made for an ink jet printer], so it dried with this weird texture [which was PERFECT! Finally a happy accident!]. Once it dried completely I measured the drawer height and cut 1" and 1.5" stripes. *Note: If you make stripes, make sure to measure each drawer... don't assume they are all the same size. The top drawer might be shorter than all the others... so if you don't notice it, assume they're all the same and cut them according to the top drawer only... IF you do that, then you'll have to go back and make a whole entire new sheet using the correct measurements of the remaining three drawers. Not that it happened to me [it totally happended to me].

Then, I used the remaining sheet [it came in a pack of three] to print off numbers for his drawers to give him more decorating options. And...I didn't do this, but here's another idea [just don't tell my son, because he'll want me to do it too]: you could get some fun stickers [like the Angry Birds stickers that I saw at Meijer... he'd love them.] and stick them onto the magnetic paper and then just cut them out. Stickers that aren't sticky... how perfect is that?!

So anyway, we now have all kind of options, and he really [really] likes moving things around and getting creative.

Here is how he chose to decorate it [for now anyway]. He decided to label his drawers using the letter magnets that we already had... isn't that just too cute [and yet so practical too]!! How fun is that?!

When a DIY Project Turns Ugly [literally]...

I have always said that this is a full-disclosure design blog. That means I share everything with you [the good, the bad and the ugly]. Well. Today it's a tale of ugly.

Not this. This is fine [in my opinion, anyway]. This is what my son's dresser looked like before I painted it [Well, technically I painted this too... about 5 years ago, it was originally pepto-pink!]. And although I still liked it, we were changing his room and I wanted to go with a different look.

Hmmm. Not exactly what I had imagined. My son was polite and said he liked it [he didn't]. Neither did I. At this point I was faced with a choice: live with it and cringe everytime I see it, or cringe right now and redo it. I chose option #2. But first, I decided to throw myself a pity party- Salvage Savvy style [which means I pretended as if it didn't happen and ditched the project for a couple days... or maybe for an entire week.].

Unfortunately, my son continued to wear different clothes everyday despite the fact that he had no dresser to put them in [can you imagine the nerve of that boy?!]. So, after a week and a half and much hard work I was left with only an ugly dresser + a room that looked like this [and in the middle of the room was my big drop cloth and the paint cans that I refused to pickup because I was too busy pity partyn'].

So frustrating. Then, to make matters worse: right in the middle of my [self-inflicted] DIY mess the kids' school went and had Fall Break on me. My dear children wanted to have a fun break. I didn't have time for fun [I had to make myself make time, though]. Here's what I learned: Chaos + Kids + Fun + DIY projects + Baby = Crazy Mess & Crazy Momma!

Well... we survived. I completed the dresser and I have almost completed the room as well. I'm really happy with the final project and will share my [successful] DIY tips tomorrow [I'll file the unsuccessful ones under "d'oh!"]. I just couldn't stand to write a "look at this great dresser, here's how I made it" post without first sharing the fact that this project didn't go as planned. Nor is it the first time my big "ta-dah" moment turned into "ta-yuck." There are so many moments when I think "what have I gotten myself into?" And if you find yourself at that place in the future, just remember... it's alright to have a little pity party, just don't give up. Laugh at your mistakes, roll up your [already rolled-up] sleeves and keep working on fabulous. You'll get it!!

Monday (P)inspiration: Random DIY Awesome-ness!

And for my second note-worthy item: I have to apologize for my lack of blogging last week. I could bore you with a million [ok, not actually one-whole million... but at least, like... 9] reasons why I didn't post more; however, I'll save that super fun [and most likely whiny] story for another day ;) The main thing is this: Today is Monday which means it's a fresh, shiny new week and I promise that it'll be filled with posts.

Now. Let the Eye Candy begin!! I just love a good DIY, don't you? I've decided to go completely random today and just show some dog-gone good DIY ideas. Stuff that makes you say, "Why didn't I think of that?!" [*As always, just click the image and it'll take you to its source.]

You know that drawer full of your kids' wonderful artwork that you'll never get rid of, but will most likely never display either? Just scan it into the computer & make one super large and totally amazing poster. I love, love [love] this!

Do you have boring ceiling lights? You know what I mean... those standard, cheap lights sold everywhere that looks like... well, let's just say that ceilings around the world could use a bra! Well, my house is FULL of them, and eventually I'd like replace them all, but that could be an expensive task: therefore, I love ideas like this! This chandelier was made from hanging plant baskets [seriously!]. Brilliant and beautiful- you've got to see how they were made!

Need a new kitchen island, but don't want to spend a ton of cash? Find an old dresser and turn it into this. I saw this idea on the Nate Berkus show, and it's just so smart.... makes me wish I needed an island! The only thing is this: Nate didn't show what to do to that back of the dresser that's never finished... I'm thinking maybe a chalkboard?? Whatever you do, it's just a lovely idea.

This is a creative, affordable and all around brilliant idea for a dollhouse. I love it. This is creativity at its finest, folks! This idea could even be taken farther by using fabulous wallpaper for a little glamour... oooo the little girl in me has so many ideas right now :) And someday it'll just go back to being a bookshelf, instead of getting stashed-away because your daughter doesn't use it but can't get rid of it [or is that just my daughter?!].

Curtain rods + fabric = genius. Love this!

Love this idea too. It's sooo easy to make this DIY dry erase board. Just put wallpaper, wrapping paper or scrapbook paper into a frame and get a dry erase marker. Could it be any easier [nope]?

DIY coasters. Just take 4x4 tiles and 4x4 scrapbook paper; adhere to tile with Mod Podge and let dry. Spray a coat of clear spray paint and attach felt pads to the bottom. Wow!! Great idea [If I were responsible enough with my furniture to use coasters, I'd totally make these!].

I believe in the power of prayer. I am a very forgetful person. This is a wonderful visual reminder for people such as myself :)

Gi-normous [yes, that's a word] frame made from rulers. Love. It. This gives me so many ideas.... hmmm. I just love Pinterest!

Taking My [little] Woo-Hoo Moment!

Blogging is fun.
Blogging is addicting.
Blogging is time consuming [especially if you're addicted].
Blogging is an emotional roller coaster filled with highs ["Look at my stats today!"] and lows ["look. at my. stats. today... {sigh}"].
Well. Today I'm taking a moment to celebrate my Woo-Hoo moments with you!
I've even taken the time to set a perfectly decorated party table for the occasion [not really, I found it via Pinterest!].

"And just what are we celebrating?" You ask. Well, first things first: Salvage Savvy now has 400 followers- Woo-Hoo! That means when you combine all sources [facebook, email subscribers & followers] I'm up to about 880 readers. For this little bloggin' gal that's truly amazing.. especially considering that I've never even hosted a Give Away [yet... hint, hint].

And here's another little Salvage Savvy fact that thrills me to no end... did you know that I cleared 100,000 pageviews a couple weeks ago?! Yup. I sure did. As of this moment I'm right at 123,845 pageviews [Woo-Hoo!] and that little-old fact just completely blows my mind, folks! Not too shabby since I'm not quite 6 months old yet. Yes-sir-ee, it's a good day to celebrate!

**Now, as a full-disclosure blogger gal, I must add something here. I'm thrilled about my success, but I have to admit that when I see other bloggers with thousands of followers who began less than a year ago I'm like, "Heyyyy... how'd ya do that?! No fair." Monday (P)inspiration: Stencils

Today I'm thinking about stencils [...you'll see why soon!!]. If you've been in the blogosphere for more than a week, then you've most likely seen some gorgeous examples of stencilled walls... but I wanted to find some gorgeous and unexpected uses of stencils for [myself and] all of my fabulous readers! As always, just click on the image to find its source... if I couldn't find a good source, you can attempt to hunt it down on Pinterest because that's where I found all of these.

Isn't this stencilled dresser just adorable and so much fun?! I want one.

I'm not sure if this is wallpaper or a stencil.. but either way, I love using this pattern in the kitchen. I think it's an unexpected and beautiful addition to an often less-formal room.

Ok, the lighting in this photo isn't great... but I had to include it. First of all, those floors are so gorgeous. And secondly, the salvaged iron artwork is so perfect for a long hallway! Love this space.

This is actually made from one of those colorful interlocking play mats for kids... no way! You've got to check out how it was made- I just love it when people make thrifty ideas look this amazing :)

And this [super annoying photo that refuses to center for some reason... oh well] stencilled bathroom ceiling is just... wow. I love it. Not sure I'd be patient enough to do it myself, but !Yay! to the awesome person who was. The hard work definately paid off with a major wow moment for that room!

Crap with Potential

I'm starting a new Friday blogging series called Crap with Potential [thus the post title]. This is where I find an item that many would lable as crap... and I show you its potential!

**BTW, if you're keeping track, that makes a grand total of three friday series here on my little bloggy-blog... I'm just never sure what I'll be in the mood to write about on Friday and I like to keep my options open! Plus, my super sweet, funny and all around awesome niece gave me the idea for this title & I love it :) [Thanks sista-niece!]

For the first post, I'm sharing these mailroom bin thing-ys [another technical term brought to you by Salvage Savvy] that I found at a flea market. There was a huge stack of them and they were only $4 each. I loved the worn, industrial look and immediately knew I had to have them! I sorted through them, found the best 4 [yup, these were the best ones... doesn't say alot for the ones I didn't choose, does it?!], paid my $16 and skipped out the door [not really, but in my mind I was definately skipping!].

Then I got them home and shared my big, awesome plan with my super hero hubby. "Ummm. They have holes in the bottom." He said. "I'm not storing sand." I said. "They're all dirty." He said. "I'll clean them." I said. He saw crap. I saw potential [technically, we were both right.]

And here's how they look now:

Perfect toy storage bins for under my son's bed!! I love, love [love] the color and the texture, and he can't mess them up [because they're already ruined, lol!].

Each bin has a theme, so he knows exactly where his toys are and exactly where his toys go [when he actually puts them up, anyway...]. Someday he'll be done with the toys, and then these will be great for clothes, shoes, sports equipment... really anything [except sand!].

Scariest Halloween Decoration E-V-E-R...

['cuz it almost burnt down my house]. Well, that's being dramatic, but it did try. I was inspired from last week's Halloween (P)inspiration post, so I painted a cool, thorny branch white, then cut-out paper bats and tied them onto the branch. It looked great... but I wanted to take it one step farther... [death & destruction].

I put an LED light in the bottom of the container and taped bats to the inside. Then, I covered everything up with white gauze so that it would have that dramatic and creepy up-lit look [and so that I could burn down the house]. It looks pretty cool, right?! When I finished I gave myself a little pat on the back for creating a $0 Halloween decoration [unless you count the cost of our insurance deductible].

Then, maybe 15 minutes later our doorbell rang... and when I went to answer the door it smelled like someone was roasting marshmallows [no one was roasting marshmallows... I was roasting gauze]. I lifted up the fabric and smoke started pouring out [yikes!!]. It really wasn't bad [yet], but it really didn't smell good and the light was all black and bubbly. I'm so thankful that my niece came over to play so I caught it early [that's who rang the doorbell].

So. Needless to say. The dramatic lighting has been unplugged and we now have a less scary, less fancy [and much safer] Halloween decoration.

Moral of the story: I'm thinking I should clear all future projects involving heat with the Fire Marshal of our home [my super hero hubby]. Have a [safe] Happy Halloween!

Monday (P)inspiration: Salvaging a Bedroom

Today I'm dreaming about bedrooms... gorgeous salvaged bedrooms to be exact. Here are my Pinterest finds!

This is the bedroom that started it all. Look at those salvaged doors. Not only are they beautiful but this is a truly brilliant idea- you want wall sconces but don't want to cut into your walls to wire them? These doors hide the wiring and make the whole process easy. Love it. I must find a place to do this in my home!

Next, I found this wall of salvaged wood. Love the texture, love the color and... well, I just love everything about it [but I don't think I'd love installing one!]. It's great to see old, rustic and worn wood being reused in a really new and contemporary way.

And look at these salvaged barn doors that have been turned into a stunning headboard! Again, they were able to wire contemporary hanging lights right into the headboard and it's a perfect mix of old and new.

Do you have gi-normous [yes, that's a word here @ Salvage Savvy] leaded windows laying around? If so, here's a unique solution for a master bedroom. These windows create a divider for the ensuite that still allows the area to remain open and airy.

I want a sliding barn door. This is so beautiful. No more typing, time to sit and say ahhhh [and imagine that I have a place, the money and the time to install one.]

This headboard won't work for every home, but I just love the creativity and those gorgeous soothing, worn wood colors. I'm thinking of a beach cottage or summer cabin... so fun! And, notice those hanging lights made with flower hangers... another brilliant idea.

Last, but soooo not least. I've seen salvaged shutters used for a queen-sized headboard many times, but these twin headboards caught my eye because of the repetition and scale. And the artwork hung above the beds add just the right amount of detail. What a calm, beautiful room!

Free Advice Friday: Bedroom Redo Using Thrifty Treasures!

I received the most adorable plea a couple weeks ago from a reader named Elizabeth... she is going to be a mommy in February and really, really wants to get their Master Bedroom completed before the arrival of their new baby [I totally understand that feeling... I redecorated 3 rooms in our house during my "nesting" phase!]. She has all kinds of goodies in the garage... and she has alot of ideas, but just wanted a little extra help. Well, that's what I'm here for, so let's get started! I've included her before photos so that you'll know what we're working with [everything can be painted except the bed, large dresser & mirror... and the walls since it's a rental!]. Also, she'd like to keep the room light and airy with a touch of shabby-chic style. And she would like turquoise or robin's egg blue accents.

Well, here are my ideas for your room, Elizabeth. This first photo is included because I adore the side tables and would love to see you create a punch of color by painting yours a vibrant color like this turquoise as shown here. Having such a bold color will instantly draw attention to your bed which is what you want, especially in a master bedroom! It's a fun, yet sophisticated color that looks amazing with neutrals.

Next, I'm including this photo for three reasons: first, the antique window above the bed is beautiful and simple. However, I would add a more contemporary wreath [like a sunburst shape] because I prefer to pair antiques with modern accessories to keep them feeling current. Secondly, I like the simple bedding shown. Go simple with crisp, white sheets and comforter- then add a soft, turquoise throw at the end of the bed and an accent pillow. Also, I would recommend doing a ruffled pillow instead of ruffled curtains [btw readers- she's considering ruffled curtains, I failed to give all of the background info!], because I like to go classic with my window treatments [only because I'm thrifty and it's alot cheaper to replace an outdated pillow than curtains once ruffles aren't as popular!]. The last thing I'd like to point out is the small group of artwork above the side tables. I would love to see you bring in fun, eclectic and vibrant artwork [white or silver frames, though] above your side tables as well.

Also, adding a natural fiber woven rug would be a great way to add texture to the room, and you can find them inexpensively at all kinds of stores.

And you could transform your lamp [and it's friend once you thrift it!] into this. I LOVE these and fully intend on making some myself soon! I like that they are gorgeous, but also neutral so they'll look like amazing jewelry on your bright new side tables [btw- the image links to the tutorial].

I recommend doing a white distressed treatment like this on your black dresser. I love, love [love] your trunk under the window, and by painting your dresser similarly it will help balance the space.

For your window treatments, I recommend doing something similar to this look. Select a woven shade in either the color of your blond furniture or the darker wood of the trim and doors. Then add white, linen panels to add more texture and keep the room light. Also, make the curtain rod really wide so that when the panels are open they actually just cover your wall and leave your entire window exposed. That's a great design trick to making windows feel larger. Also, hang your rod as close to the ceiling as possible and get the longest curtains you can to give the window height. A bonus is that your curtains will frame your vintage trunk making it feel like a window seat!

Finally [sorry, I don't have a photo for this one], I would recommend removing the large mirror above your dresser and storing it. In my opinion, rooms look best when they look eclectic and acquired over time- and the mirror just matches your bed too well! You could paint the mirror that is in your garage either a distressed white or an aged silver color and hang it above the dresser.

I hope all of this advice helps as you nest-away and get your home ready for that sweet, little new addition who is arriving soon! I'd love to see what your room looks like when you're done, so send me pictures please :)

A [Yummy] High Chair Makeover

Remember that teal distressed table that I loved from Free Adivce Friday #10: Fixing up an Entry Table? Well... it was my inspiration for a much-needed high chair makeover for my daughter. This chair was purchased for $20 at a garage sale. It looks like someone attempted to paint it, but didn't make it past the sanding phase [and who could blame them, sanding is horrible.]

Well, I have a secret-sanding weapon. It's called Prepare-it from Porter Paints. Say good-bye to sanding with this liquid gold. It's especially great for small spindles like this chair... all you have to do is wipe it on and it prepares the surface for you [thus the name... Prepare-it]. Just make sure to use chemical gloves, and if you can go outside that's best too, because the fumes are strong.

After preparing the surface, I used spray paint in a grey primer [it's always dangerous for me to use grey primer, because everytime I am tempted to leave it grey... doesn't it look nice already?!]

But alas, I pressed on toward my goal: I used a spray paint color called Lagoon on the high chair. It was gorgeous. But a little bright for our house!

Soooo. I busted out my tintable glaze and burnt umber paint to give the chair a distressed/antiqued look. Mixing the glaze is an art, not a science [that's why I'm able to do it!]... I do about 3 parts glaze to 1 part paint and then I thin it just a little with water. Just remember: the more paint you put in, the darker the glaze will become. Likewise, the more water you put in, the runnier your glaze will become.

Here's what my glaze looked like once completely mixed. [If you're awesome like me, then you'll slop and drip it everywhere too!]

Next, I used a paint brush to paint the glaze over the entire surface [but work one area at a time]. For instance, I covered this entire spindle...

Then I used a soft cloth [don't tell my son, but I cut-up an old t-shirt of his] to wipe it off. Be sure to leave it in the creases. The more you wipe off, the less distressed it will look. Just go until you are happy! [Warning: glaze dries darker, so remember that as you are working!] Once that spindle looked the way I wanted, then I moved on to the next. Working in small sections ensures that your glaze stays wet... once it dries... it dries and you don't get to fix it!

For added distressing I used the side, flat part of my brush to make a brown line on the edges... this makes them look extra worn.

I could have stopped at that point and had a perfectly beautiful chair... but I wanted to add one more detail to make it extra fun. What better word for a high chair tray than Yum?! I started by finding a font that I liked and then I measured it out and drew it onto the tray.

Then I took my beloved burnt umber paint and filled it in [to the best of my ability].

Then, I used the glaze mixture to go over the entire thing a second time.

Once again, I wiped the glaze away until it pleased me... I don't have a photo of the final step... but it's important [especially for a high chair]. I finished it off by using a clear coat of water-based polycrylic protective finish [3 coats to be exact]. This ensures that it can be used [and abused] and will withstand anything that my daughter can [and will] throw at it.

Of course, I have to include a photo of my little sweetie's first meal in her super-yummy high chair :) I think she likes it...

Monday (P)inspiration: A Black & White Halloween

Ahhh... Pinterest. You help me ease into each new week with my Monday (P)inspiration dream time! Today I'm welcoming the month of October by dreaming about Halloween... specifically black & white decorations. Now this is my kind of Halloween decor... [can you tell that I'm a sugar & spice kinda gal?!].

I had to start with this idea... how cute is this?! Halloween decor that's fun and whimsical [not scary]... I know, I know... but that's just me!

Love the little mice [and that's the only time I'll ever type those words!]

How adorable are those branches with the little bats... hmmm, gives me an idea...

Simple, fun and yet it still has a bit of an eerie Halloween vibe. Love it!

Fun spider suckers, and great ideas for decorating pumpkins... but that staircase is my favorite!!

So if you even kind of like Salvage Savvy and aren't a follower... please join... it will make me really, really happy!]. Anyway, this blog series is my way of saying "thank you" and shining the spotlight on the amazing things that you guys create!
My first example of greatness is from Kim @ Too Much Time on My Hands. This piece made from pallets is so clever and rustic and just truly amazing. Check out Kim's blog, because it's filled with fun & great projects!

Next, I just discovered Laura @ West Furniture Revival. How could I not have known about her until now? This desk is crazy gorgeous and it's just one of many, many beautiful pieces that she's redone.

And this last feature is near & dear to my heart because it's from a really sweet reader named Angela whom I've enjoyed getting to know [via email anyway!]. She and her husband have tackled several DIY projects to make super fun and extremely adorable rooms for their kids. The best part is that they were able to make them look amazing while staying within their budget... that's what I just love to hear!

So. cute. Great job! I see many more beautiful decor projects in their future :)

Think Outside the Box: Beyond Initials

[Hi.]

When I saw this "Yo" on Pinterest [from Kristen F. Davis Designs] I knew it was a perfect idea for my son's room. It's so fun and playful and yet still dude-ish [yes, that's a real word... at least here @ Salvage Savvy!]. However, when I showed it to my son, he said, "I like it, but I want mine to say something else... like "Hi." So. Brilliant. You see, this boy loves the word "hi." I have no idea why, but virtually every school paper has a little "hi" snuck onto it somewhere [much like a word search version of Where's Waldo]. And if you have ever recieved a present, card or note from my son... it has "hi" written on it somewhere [ok, not somewhere... everywhere!]. Therefore, it took just two little letters to make his room totally... him. "Hi" sums him up much better than his initials ever could!

Here's a quick little tutorial on how I made them:

It all began with typical paper mache letters.

Then I spray painted them a red-clay color [basically red with alot of brown in it]. Somehow I failed to photograph them painted... but I managed to get a picture of my drop cloth after painting them [I though it earned a few cool points with this graffiti-like image!]

Next, I turned to my tried & true DIY friend [insert drum roll here]. Silver Rub N' Buff!! I wanted it to feel old and industrial so I rubbed it on unevenly and made sure to let splotches of red show through.

And that is all. Done, completed & finished. Taking these pictures and writing this post took 3 times longer than the project itself [which is just wrong!]. How can you inject a little personal touch into your decor using letters? It's something to think about :)

Monday (P)inspiration: Clever and Inexpensive Storage Ideas

I love storage ideas. Not because I'm super organized, but because I am never organized enough. It's become a quest for me... like the Knights of the Round Table's quest for the Holy Grail, like Oprah's self-admitted quest for a [non-existent] magical diet pill or like that one-armed villian guy with a cat's quest for Inspector Gadget [Next time, Gadget... next time].

Well, here are a few more storage ideas from Pinterest... they range from clever to brilliant and are all inexpensive and extremely creative!

I don't have a whole lot of regular glasses, [nor do I know anyone who does] but I love this idea for storing Sunglasses!

This is brilliant!! It could be used for bathroom, office, kitchen and even garage storage ideas.

Stacked vintage suitcases. Very clever [and stylish].

Not so sure about doing this in a kid's room, [I can already see them swinging from basket to basket like Tarzan!]. However, I'm thinking this would be perfect for the garage...

Flower planters for wall storage. So smart.

This would definately be better than throwing all my jewerly in a bowl... not that I don't enjoy having a big lump of knotted-up necklaces everytime I pull one out :)

Brilliant. Just brilliant!
